Bulgaria
Bulgaria joined the EU together with Romania in January 2007. As a former member of the Eastern Bloc, Bulgaria is facing similar transitional challenges that previously Communist countries have faced. A desperate need for legal, structural and political reforms are hindering the country’s progress, yet the potential in Bulgaria is significant.
Sharing a border with Greece and Turkey, Bulgaria provides a crossroads between East & West. With a strong manufacturing base and a useful geographic position, Bulgaria is a natural base for those wishing to take advantage of EU and Balkan markets.
Yet investors are aware that Bulgaria’s road to modernization and EURO adoption is long and fraught with dangers. The country is far behind where Czech Republic & Poland were in 2004 when they joined the EU. While EU money and subsequent pressures to reform will help, Bulgaria’s future is by no means assured. The development of this fascinating country will be interesting to observe.
